GRIZZLY BEAR RELEASE NEW TRACK, "FOUR CYPRESSES"

The last time Grizzly Bear released an album, it was 2012. Needless to say, much has changed in the world and American climate since then. They're back with a new full-length, Painted Ruins, on August 18th, and in their new song, "Four Cypresses," it's clear the band has changed along with the times. According to Pitchfork, lyricist Daniel Rossen wrote the song from the "perspective of a homeless person sleeping in the driveway of a place he was staying in L.A., but broadened to encompass his thoughts about the refugee experience and life during wartime."
That might not be something you get, however, during your first experience of the song itself. You might be taken away by its drifting melody, one that rightfully deserves the oft-overused claim of being "ethereal." The lyric video, which utilizes camcorder footage, is disjointed in a way that pushes to the forefront the unreal disposition of the track. The lyrics themselves are an odd vignette, describing a situation and moment in time that can be understood when the track is put in context by the lyricist but perceived quite differently by anyone who may be encountering it. There's a sense of fluidity throughout every aspect of the song that makes it a perfect close-your-eyes-and-listen-in-the-sun summer track, if you want to leave your body for another world for a while.
